Quentin carries an ordinal value of 100, reducing to One, a number tied to new beginnings and independence. Its forward and reverse ordinal values sit close together at 100 and 89, because its letters are spread fairly evenly across the alphabet. The Chaldean system gives 27, which reduces to Nine and so reads differently from the standard total.
Quentin comes from the Latin Quintinus, from quintus, "fifth," in the Roman habit of naming children by birth order. It was borne by a missionary saint of northern France, Saint Quentin, whose name survives in the town of Saint-Quentin.
In history. The Roman habit of naming children by birth order also gave Sextus (sixth), Septimus (seventh), Octavius (eighth) and Decimus (tenth). Quentin has been used in English since the Middle Ages and was boosted by Sir Walter Scott's 1823 novel Quentin Durward.
How Quentin adds up
In the ordinal cipher each letter takes its position in the alphabet. Quentin is spelled Q-U-E-N-T-I-N, which gives 17 + 21 + 5 + 14 + 20 + 9 + 14 = 100. Reducing the total to a single digit (1+0+0=1) gives 1.
