Frequently asked
What is gematria, in short?
It's a centuries-old practice of turning letters into numbers and adding them up, originally from Hebrew and Greek numerology, later adapted into English-letter systems and modern numerology practices.
What's the difference between all these ciphers?
Ordinal, Reverse, Reduction, and Extended treat the alphabet mathematically in different ways. Chaldean and Pythagorean are traditional numerology systems with their own specific letter values. Fibonacci, Prime, Trigonal, and Square apply well-known number sequences to each letter's position instead.
What is Chaldean gematria?
Chaldean numerology is an older system that assigns each letter a value from 1 to 8 based on ancient Chaldean tradition — notably, no letter is ever assigned the number 9, which was considered sacred.
Why doesn't Chaldean appear on the Spanish and Portuguese versions?
Chaldean is a specific traditional letter-by-letter assignment defined only for the English alphabet — there's no authentic Chaldean mapping for Ñ or accented Spanish/Portuguese letters, so we didn't invent one.
Why isn't there a Jewish or Hebrew Gematria column?
Jewish/Hebrew Gematria uses the Hebrew alphabet, which has its own distinct set of letters and values — it isn't something that can be derived from Latin-alphabet text, so we don't offer a made-up substitute for it here.
What are the matching words below the result?
They're other words from a dictionary of common English words that happen to add up to the exact same value under your selected cipher — a classic way gematria is explored, looking for words that 'share a number.'
