How name numbers are calculated
Every letter in your name is converted to a number. In the Pythagorean system A to I are 1 to 9, then the pattern repeats (J is 1, K is 2, and so on). In the Chaldean system letters are valued 1 to 8 by sound, and 9 is left out as sacred. The values of all the letters are added together and reduced by adding the digits until a single digit remains, except for the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Adding every letter gives your Expression or Destiny Number, adding only the vowels gives your Soul Urge Number, and adding only the consonants gives your Personality Number. What is a name number in numerology?
A name number is a single digit (or master number 11, 22, 33) found by turning the letters of your name into numbers and adding them. The three main ones are the Expression (Destiny) Number from all letters, the Soul Urge Number from the vowels, and the Personality Number from the consonants.
How do I calculate my name number?
Write out your full birth name, convert each letter to a number using the Pythagorean chart (A=1, B=2 ... I=9, then J=1 again), add them all up and keep adding the digits until you reach a single digit. Stop at 11, 22 or 33, which are master numbers. The calculator above does this for you and shows each letter's value.
What is the difference between the Expression and Destiny number?
They are the same number. Different numerology books use Expression or Destiny for the number calculated from every letter in your full birth name. It is said to describe your natural talents and the way you express yourself.
What is the Soul Urge number?
Your Soul Urge Number (or Heart's Desire) is calculated from the vowels in your name. In numerology it describes your inner motivations and what you truly want.
What is the Personality number?
Your Personality Number is calculated from the consonants in your name and describes the outer impression you give to other people.
Should I use my birth name or the name I go by?
Traditionally numerology uses the full name given at birth for the Expression and Soul Urge numbers. Some people also check the name they use today to see how it adds up, and many treat that as the number describing how they present now.
What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?
Pythagorean numerology assigns the letters A to Z the numbers 1 to 9 in order, repeating. Chaldean numerology uses an older system based on letter sounds, with values 1 to 8 and no 9. The same name often gives different totals in each system, so many people compare both.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant in numerology?
This calculator treats Y as a consonant, which is the most common convention. Some numerologists count it as a vowel when it makes the vowel sound, as in "Lynn", so results can differ slightly between sources.
What are master numbers?
11, 22 and 33 are master numbers. They are not reduced to a single digit and are said to carry a stronger potential and a greater challenge than the single digits.
Does the calculator ignore spaces, hyphens and accents?
Yes. Only letters count. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and numbers are ignored, and accented letters are treated as their plain versions, so José is read as JOSE.
