Alchemy carries an ordinal value of 67, reducing to Four, a number tied to structure and stability. Its reverse ordinal of 122 sits well above its forward ordinal of 67, a sign that most of its letters fall early in the alphabet.
"Alchemy" came into English through Old French and Medieval Latin from the Arabic al-kīmiyā, which probably goes back to a Greek word for the art of working metals. The tradition combined practical metallurgy with a philosophical search for transformation, including the legendary change of base metals into gold, and it was an ancestor of modern chemistry.
History. Jabir ibn Hayyan (about 721–815), Paracelsus (1493–1541) and Isaac Newton, who left a large body of alchemical writing, all worked at the boundary between chemistry and philosophy. The Emerald Tablet, a short text that begins "as above, so below," is the most quoted alchemical text.
How Alchemy adds up
In the ordinal cipher each letter takes its position in the alphabet. Alchemy is spelled A-L-C-H-E-M-Y, which gives 1 + 12 + 3 + 8 + 5 + 13 + 25 = 67. Reducing the total to a single digit (6+7=13, then 1+3=4) gives 4.
