Zodiac carries an ordinal value of 58, reducing to Four, a number tied to structure and stability. Its reverse ordinal of 104 sits well above its forward ordinal of 58, a sign that most of its letters fall early in the alphabet. The Chaldean system gives 23, which reduces to Five and so reads differently from the standard total.

"Zodiac" comes from the Greek zōidiakos kyklos, "circle of little animals," from zōion, "animal." It is the belt of sky divided into twelve signs, a system that took its present form in Babylonian and Greek astronomy, and it gives its name to the signs used in horoscopes.

In practice. Each of the twelve signs covers 30 degrees of the ecliptic, the sun's apparent path, and the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology starts at the March equinox. Because of precession, the signs no longer line up with the constellations of the same names. Daily readings for each sign are at Star Cipher.

How Zodiac adds up

In the ordinal cipher each letter takes its position in the alphabet. Zodiac is spelled Z-O-D-I-A-C, which gives 26 + 15 + 4 + 9 + 1 + 3 = 58. Reducing the total to a single digit (5+8=13, then 1+3=4) gives 4.
