108
Number — gematria and numerology meaning
One hundred and eight is sacred in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions: a mala, or string of prayer beads, usually has 108 beads, and many temples have 108 steps or statues. It is also 11 × 22 × 33, and the distance from the Earth to the Sun is roughly 108 times the Sun's diameter, a coincidence often noted by modern writers. It reduces to Nine in numerology.
In Japan, Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times on New Year's Eve in a ceremony called Joya no Kane, one strike for each of the 108 worldly desires said to cause suffering.
